Don’t be opposed to new things

Believe it or not, I wasn’t big on social media. It was something that was talked about a lot, at school, with friends and you would see it everywhere. I was completely opposed. I guess you can call me the rebel. I saw social media as something people would waste their time on, stating their opinions on certain topics and I thought “Who would want to hear my opinion?!”

After that, my feelings towards social media have changed. Thinking that it was something of a waste of time and being forced to implement it in all projects at university, I didn’t want to have any part of it. Little did I know that all my views would change.

Social media is your oyster

Social media is a great place to meet like-minded people, professionals in fact, but besides that social media has changed in the way my life is in general.

Since using social media, I have:

  • Increased my group of friends
  • Increased my group of professional contacts
  • Acquired and worked with some great clients
  • Learned as much from others as they did from me
  • Opened myself up to new ideas and ways of doing things
  • Put my creativity on full speed
  • Became more aware of what was happening around the world

With social media it easy to meet others half way around the world. It is your forum and your chat room. With all the positives of social media, I can’t see why I opposed it before I even really gave it a chance. I guess, I really did judge a book by its cover, but I am happy to say that my views have changed.

With this said, don’t be opposed to new things. Just because everyone else is doing it, that doesn’t mean that you have to. Still try and see what all the chatter is about and even with social media, give new platforms and new programs a chance.  You might be on Facebook and think that you don’t need Twitter. Trying it out won’t hurt you and the same goes for trying out Pinterest, Rebelmouse and anything that might seem new to you. Think of social media as a triple chocolate cake and then someone comes out with a quadruple chocolate cake. You might think, why quadruple when triple was just fine. It might be, but you might also like the quadruple chocolate cake.

Despite of what you might be hearing, all these things could change. Social media is most likely going to stay, but the platforms will change. I can definitely see certain social media platforms that I don’t use as much or have just lost interest in them. Luckily for us, there are always new social media platforms coming out and if you can find something positive for yourself in using it, then take advantage of it. “Carpe Diem” all the way!
